Surviving hurricane season in an apartment

Here are the basics for staying prepared for hurricane season when you live in an apartment.

  1. Make sure you know the details of your renter's insurance. Does it cover flooding? Does it cover damage to furniture and other items? What do you need in order to be able to file a claim? Make sure to have pictures and/or an inventory of your possessions for this purpose and keep them in a safe place.  And of course always keep your policy up to date.
  2. Have an emergency kit ready to go. Make sure to have certain items together and ready if needed. You will want to have some perishable food items, water, flashlight, batteries, clothing items, phone charger, medications, cash, first aid kit, pet food and a few basic tools.
  3. Plan routes to local shelters keeping in mind low lying areas and streets along the way and make a route avoiding those areas.
  4. Keep track of your pets, make plans for them to be cared for if needed and always make sure they have their tags or are micro chipped.
  5. Make sure your car has had basic maintenance done before hurricane season starts and if a hurricane is headed your way keep your gas tank filled up.
